The University of Edinburgh is a proud supporter of the Young Person’s Guarantee. The University has made an ongoing commitment to creating opportunities for young people, acknowledging the impact this has on meeting the University’s strategic aims and objectives, including Strategy 2030, the Community Plan and People Strategy.
Following another two successful years of supporting Young Person’s Guarantee, the University has renewed its commitments in four areas:
- Preparing young people for the world of work
- Investing in a skilled workforce
- Creating an inclusive workforce
- Being a champion for the Young Person’s Guarantee
Here are some highlights from the past two years.
Isla – Foundation Apprentice, School of Chemistry

As a Foundation Apprentice, Isla supported teaching laboratories and found the experience very rewarding.

Calum – Digital Marketing Modern Apprentice, Communications and Marketing

Calum joined the University’s busy Communications and Marketing department last year. He quickly became a vital part of the team.
Steven Ross, Head of Digital Marketing and Calum’s manager, said:
“Calum exhibits drive and enthusiasm and approaches every task with determination, bringing significant benefits to our team and the University.”

Nahom – IT Support Modern Apprentice, School of Mathematics
Nahom has impressed everyone with his enthusiasm and ability to learn in a fast-paced environment.
Steven Law, Computing Manager and Nahom’s manager, said: “I’m very pleased with how Nahom has grasped the opportunity to learn and develop, and I’m confident that he will continue to thrive.”

Assan – Career Ready Student, Maintenance Services and Estates

During the Career Ready Programme, Assan was able to develop his communication skills and self-confidence.
Rowena Dalziel, Assan’s Career Ready Mentor and part of the Maintenance Planning team at the University, said:

The University will not be accepting applications to be mentors as part of the Career Ready Programme Mentors in the 2025/26 academic year. This will be reviewed in 2026.
Youth opportunities are also supported by many departments across the University. The BioQuarter offers internship and mentoring opportunities for young people, and the Employ.ed on Campus programme provides invaluable summer internships each year.
