New working group responding to High Court ruling

The University has formed a short-life working group to focus on the outcomes of a key High Court ruling. 

In February 2024, a High Court ruling found the University of Bristol had contributed to the death of a student, Natasha Abrahart, by failing to make reasonable adjustments for her. The University of Bristol was also found to have discriminated against the student under the Equality Act 2010. 

Two sub-groups are focussing on recommendations and actions in two areas: 

  • Policy and guidance, staff training and School processes in relation to the Equality Act 
  • Defining and auditing our competence standards.  

The group reports into the Student Lifecycle Management Group and includes representation from academic staff and colleagues across all three Colleges. 

Staff will be informed about any changes in process for them or their teams which result from any future recommendations.
