Beyond the campus: how staff and students are shaping Edinburgh
The Department for Social Responsibility and Sustainability has published the Year 4 report of the University’s Community Plan, highlighting the work staff and students have done to support local communities. Over the past four years, this University-wide effort has delivered on 32 commitments, strengthening our relationships across the Edinburgh City Region.
What we’ve achieved together
With contributions from teams across the University, as well as staff who’ve volunteered their time and expertise, work to deliver on the Community Plan has helped make a real difference. Key highlights from the past year include:
- Bringing schools and science together – Expanding engagement between local schools and Edinburgh BioQuarter, inspiring the next generation in STEM. Through a new programme, school pupils have had the chance to visit BioQuarter and learn first-hand about careers in science, medicine, and healthcare.
- Championing diversity – Embedding community voices in the University’s Race Review to drive meaningful change.
- Creating welcoming spaces – Opening two new University buildings with public access, ensuring our campus is for everyone.
- Supporting grassroots change – Student-led societies are partnering with local residents to address key challenges.
- Investing in social good – The University’s Social Investment Fund is backing social enterprises that benefit Edinburgh.
What’s next – and how to get involved
Eppy Harries-Pugh, a Communications Manager from Social Responsibility and Sustainability, said:
“As we look ahead, we want to keep this momentum going! One way to stay involved is by joining the Edinburgh Community Engagement Forum.”
“Anyone is welcome to become a member—student, academic and professional services staff alike – whether or not you have previous experience in community engagement. The Forum is a space to share best practices, find out how to get involved in local projects or involve the public in research, and connect with University students and staff working in community engagement.”
“A huge thank you to every staff member who has contributed— – whether through projects, partnerships, or volunteering. Your efforts make a real impact.”
