Founded in 1989 as an extension of the University’s Women’s Club, the group aimed to provide a welcoming space for international women in Edinburgh, assisting them in settling down and building a community. What began as a network for university affiliates’ wives has grown to include male partners and their children, evolving into a vibrant community rich in diverse nationalities, cultures, and stories.
The club offers a range of special interest groups, covering activities from badminton and bridge to literature, poetry, and gardening. These groups not only cater to a variety of interests but also create opportunities for members to connect, share passions, and forge lasting friendships.
The club’s headquarters at 18 Buccleuch Place provides a welcoming environment for the International Women’s Group, meeting every Tuesday during term time. Here, activities span from English language classes to social gatherings and excursions to local places of interest. The approach is informal, with no tests required for participation in English classes, and a nominal fee of £1 per session is charged.
The club has also compiled a comprehensive collection of information on living in Edinburgh, covering everything from practical advice to cultural events, ensuring that members have all they need to navigate their new surroundings effectively.
