Top updates from across the University.

1. The Principal’s New Year welcome

The Principal emailed all staff after the festive break to welcome them back. He thanked colleagues who worked during the Christmas holidays to ensure the University’s essential services were delivered. Although 2023 was a challenging year, the Principal’s message highlighted several successes such as the new Exascale computer and investment into the Wellbeing Centre and the King’s Buildings Nucleus which gives us much to be proud of. For 2024, he highlighted our new partnership ‘Beyond Net Zero’ and the opening of the Edinburgh Futures Institute as just some of what we have to look forward to.

2. Pay grade scale review

In December Bulletin reported that the University Court had approved proposed changes to the University’s pay grade scale with effect from spring this year. There is a SharePoint site with further guidance including FAQs, a presentation and a grade scale change impact calculator. A specific date for the change will be communicated in due course.

3. Rector Election 2024

Nominations are drawing to a close for the position of University Rector. Staff and matriculated students can all play a part in nominating candidates, so please consider who would be a good fit for this important role. The role is open to individuals who are not currently a member of staff or a student as the Rector is an external candidate who is supported by our University community. Nomination forms must be sent by 12 noon on Monday 5 February.
