Curriculum Transformation update

Reading time: 2 minutes

A key focus for the Curriculum Transformation Project over the last six months has been on the continued development of proposals for a new University Curriculum Framework and on refining this proposition through a period of in-depth engagement with Schools and Colleges.

The Curriculum Transformation Project will work to review the shape, design, and delivery of the University’s current curriculum to ensure it develops with the needs of future students in mind.

The Curriculum Transformation Hub has been restructured and updated to reflect these developments. The Hub includes details of the current version of the proposed Undergraduate and Taught Postgraduate Curriculum Frameworks which consist of Programme Archetypes (intended to provide a consistent structural template for degree programmes) and Curriculum Design Principles (to guide the use of the archetypes and other aspects of teaching, learning and assessment).

The Undergraduate Programme Archetypes combine space for disciplinary depth and excellence with space for learning beyond the primary discipline (including Challenge Courses), interdisciplinary and experiential learning to support achievement of the Edinburgh Student Vision. Working definitions for Challenge Courses, where students would learn alongside students from other disciplines and explore interdisciplinary topics and themes linked to the University’s research strengths, and Experiential Learning were approved by the Curriculum Transformation Board in May 2023. These definitions along with illustrative examples of potential Challenge and Experiential Learning courses have been added to the Hub.

In response to the pressures faced by University staff, the Curriculum Transformation Project slowed the pace of engagement with Schools over the spring and summer but these discussions have now resumed to further develop the curriculum. This includes a series of College and University level workshops to test, refine and extend the Taught Postgraduate Programme Archetypes.
