1. Welcome to the new academic year
To mark the start of the new academic year, the Principal emailed all staff and students last week. His update explained that there is much to look forward to, from the University’s position as leading global research in artificial intelligence for the last 60 years to the UK re-associating with the EU science research scheme, Horizon. It also acknowledged a number of challenges including continued industrial action and addressing feedback from the recent National Student Survey.

2. Industrial action update
In the latest update on industrial action, our Director of Human Resources James Saville emailed all staff on 12 September to confirm that our immediate priority is to provide any outstanding marks for students affected by the recently-ended marking and assessment boycott. We’re asking impacted colleagues to speak to their line manager or School management team about workload and how best to prioritise. The University continues to engage in further discussions aimed at resolving the underlying dispute on pay and conditions.

3. Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC)
As already communicated to all staff, the University has restricted access to some areas in eight buildings as a precautionary measure following safety concerns around the use of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC). Arrangements have been put in place for alternative teaching venues and those affected have been informed. We’ll provide updates on timelines as soon as we can. In the meantime, all guidance and the latest information can be found on the University website.
