University scholars honoured by Royal Society of Edinburgh

Scholars from the University of Edinburgh have been awarded Honorary Fellowships by The Royal Society of Edinburgh.

The University has 18 academics recognised among the 91 new fellows elected from across the sciences, education, the arts business and public life.

The academics were recognised as “some of the greatest thinkers, researchers and practitioners in their field in Scotland today”.

Inspiring Scotland

The Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) looks to award the most brilliant minds who can inspire and support future generations of Scottish talent. This year’s new members will be joining the RSE’s current Fellowship, which comprises 1,800 members committed to making a positive impact in Scotland and beyond.

Leading scholars from all three of the University’s colleges were awarded. The list also includes Dame Katherine Grainger, head of UK Sport and an Olympic gold medallist, and a University of Edinburgh alumna.

Professor Richard Anderson, Elsie Inglis Professor of Clinical Reproductive Science, Co-Director of the Centre for Reproductive Health.

Professor Ewen Harrison OBE, Professor of Surgery and Data Science in the Usher Institute.

Professor Stewart Mercer, Professor of Primary Care and Multimorbidity in the Usher Institute.

Professor Harish Nair, Professor of Paediatric Infectious Diseases and Global Health, in the Usher Institute.

Professor Robert Semple, Chair of Translational Molecular Medicine in the Centre for Cardiovascular Science.

Professor Sarah Walmsley, Professor of Respiratory Medicine in the Centre for Inflammation Research.

Professor Sharon Cowan, Professor of Feminist and Queer Legal Studies in Edinburgh Law School.

Professor Peter Higgins, Professor of Education (Environmental, Sustainability & Outdoor Education) in Moray House School of Education and Sport.

Professor Janette Webb, MBE Professorial Fellow in the School of Social & Political Science.
