World AIDS Day 2022

Reading time: 2 minutes

In light of World AIDS Day on 1 December, Staff Pride Network (SPN) members Cathy Naughton, Co-Comms & Media Officer, and Katie Nicoll Baines, Co-Chair, share more about Waverley Care’s Wear Red for World AIDS Day initiative.

SPN have had a long-standing relationship with Waverley Care, Scotland’s HIV and Hepatitis C charity, so we attended their launch event in October to learn more about the work that the charity does to support those living with HIV in Scotland. A speaker shared how they had benefitted from the support that Waverley Care offers and now works for the charity to pass on those benefits to others.

Following the drinks reception, we were inspired to support their Wear Red for World AIDS Day initiative and, with SPN, would like to encourage all staff and students at the University to join in.

World AIDS Day is marked every year on 1 December. The initiative is designed to unite people in the fight against HIV, raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds the condition. Please join the SPN to Wear Red for World AIDS Day and donate at least £1 to Waverley Care via their dedicated JustGiving page. If every member of staff at the University were able to donate just £1 each that could generate over £15,000 for a great charity doing incredible work in our city.

SPN are also delivering an event with the School of Art on 1 December at 6pm in West Court, Edinburgh College of Art. The Farewell Symphony with Sam Moore, writer, artist, and editor, will explore the AIDS crisis, disappearance, and queer histories. You can register your attendance via EventBrite.

The event is free to attend, but if you have the means, a donation of £2 would be welcome to the Waverley JustGiving page.
