The Edinburgh Global Photography Competition has been a popular annual fixture in the University’s calendar since its inception in 2010. To celebrate the launch of the 2021 competition this autumn, we look back on more than a decade of creative images captured by our international student community.

“My friends and I climbing Arthur’s Seat. We had just arrived in Edinburgh and went up Salisbury Crags to enjoy the view of our new home.” Sydney Michelle Tichenor, 2010

“The Harmonium Project, which opened this year’s [2015] Edinburgh International Festival, was a truly magical experience. This photo captures the climax of the show, a moment that can be best described as ‘unexpected’.” Andrei Dumitriu, Experiences category, 2015

“It is rare to see an aurora in Edinburgh, and requires special conditions to capture them: high-intensity solar magnetic activity to reach this far, a clear sky, a good camera and patience to wait for them to appear.” Paulo Valdivia, First prize, 2016

Left: “A sunrise at the Arthur’s seat. What a great view to enjoy before the day begins. The silhouette of people and a bike gives me the Edinburgh city vibes.” Danghatai Wongthanaroj, Principal’s choice, 2020. Right: “And sometimes, just sometimes, when people say ‘forever’ they mean it. This is one of my favourite clicks, which I captured at the Meadows that misty afternoon while I was on my way back from the University.” Sachinda Dulanjana, People’s choice, 2020

“On the hunt of the three seal-maidens who inhabit the loch, we were greeted instead by autumn’s colourful coat. The peaceful atmosphere and intrinsic beauty of the Scottish wilderness can be better appreciated in the harvest season when the low-angle light and vibrant colours create a spectacle for the eyes to see.” Sergiu Jiduc, Local category, 2013

“After walking through lots of mud and tall grass, I unexpectedly came across this highland cow grazing in the Pentland Hills.” Ashley Lee, Second prize, 2017

“The different colours of the trees and the different types of buildings represent the diversity of Edinburgh.” Tezcan Cogalan, View category, 2016

Left: “Festival wonder” Li Yang, People and community category, 2018. Right: “Sunset on the Scott Monument.” Veatriki Theodoratou, Urban category, 2013

“This photo is taken with the Edinburgh Photo Society on Calton Hill, in Edinburgh, under the trip called Night Photography. We used steel wool on fire for the light painting in front of the monument.” Wikiwat Thitasiri, Second prize, 2014

“Sometimes we just need to stop for a moment and enjoy everything around us.” Azfar Abd Halim, First prize, 2019

“I love Old College, this iconic building.” Watson Shang, Principal’s Choice, 2015
